Leading Innovation in Clean Energy: EPi’s Award-Winning Journey

Environmental Power International continues to play a leading role in the development of sustainable energy technologies.  Most recently, EPi’s UK Gov’t Sponsored H2BECCS project led to HiiROC being named Innovation Project of the Year at the Hydrogen UK Awards 2026. This prestigious recognition highlights EPi’s continued commitment to delivering practical, scalable solutions that support the transition to a low carbon future.

This latest achievement builds on a long and proven history of environmental innovation. For nearly two decades, EPi has been recognised for developing technologies that transform waste into clean energy, reducing reliance on landfill and contributing to global decarbonisation efforts.

Innovation Project of the Year

At the Hydrogen UK Annual Conference Awards Ceremony, EPi, in partnership with HiiROC, received the award for Innovation Project of the Year. The project forms part of the UK Government Hydrogen Accelerator Programme and recognises a breakthrough technology capable of converting waste and biomass into biomethane without creating any airborne emissions.

This biomethane can then be transformed into low carbon hydrogen through the integration of advanced partner technology. The combined process produces a cost effective hydrogen fuel with significantly negative carbon intensity, offering a powerful solution to both waste management and clean energy production.

The project was selected as one of only three technologies from a field of more than sixty competitors. This recognition reinforces EPi’s position at the forefront of hydrogen innovation and highlights the company’s contribution to the UK’s clean power mission and energy security objectives.

Building on a Proven Heritage of Environmental Innovation

While the Hydrogen UK award reflects EPi’s current leadership in clean energy, it also continues a legacy of recognised technological achievement.

In 2007, EPi received the Environmental and Sustainable Technology Award at a prestigious ceremony held at the House of Lords in London. The award recognised the company’s pioneering work in developing commercially viable pyrolysis technology capable of converting waste into electricity.
The EPi process significantly reduces both the volume and weight of waste materials, helping to lower dependence on landfill and improve the sustainability of waste management operations.

During the same year, EPi was also honoured with the Rushlight Environmental Award for Biomass. This award acknowledged the company’s successful development of renewable energy generation technology capable of producing bio char and clean energy from a wide range of biomass sources without generating airborne emissions.   EPi’s full scale demonstration plant, operating within an active waste facility in South London, provided clear evidence of the commercial and operational viability of the technology.

These early achievements established EPi as a forward thinking environmental technology company committed to delivering real world solutions for a wide range of global energy challenges.

Driving the Future of Sustainable Energy

Today, EPi continues to develop innovative technologies that support the shift towards cleaner, more secure energy systems. By transforming waste streams into valuable energy resources, the company is helping industries and governments reduce emissions, improve sustainability performance and move closer to net zero targets.

From award winning waste to energy solutions, to pioneering hydrogen innovation, EPi’s journey demonstrates a consistent focus on practical environmental impact, technological advancement and long term energy resilience.
