£5M Awarded to Demonstrate EPi’s Zero-Emission Hydrogen Technology

Environmental Power International (UK R&D) Limited has been selected as one of only six organisations to receive Phase 2 funding under the UK Government's Hydrogen BECCS Innovation Programme, securing up to £5 million to demonstrate its Pure Pyrolysis Refined technology.

The competition for Phase 2 funding is now closed. A total of £26.2 million has been awarded across six projects.

EPi’s Technology: Pure Pyrolysis Refined

Developed over more than two decades in the UK, EPi’s Pure Pyrolysis process:

  • Converts organic feedstocks into high-quality fuel gas and carbon-rich char

  • Operates with no combustion, using electrical heating, resulting in zero emissions

  • Offers modular scalability, enabling localised solutions

Key benefits include:

  • High hydrogen yields

  • Solid carbon sequestration

  • Exceptional energy efficiency

From R&D to Demonstration

Phase 1 involved:

  • Laboratory testing

  • Advanced g-Proms modelling

  • Process modification for hydrogen production and carbon capture

  • Integrated design of three sub-systems:

    • EPi Pyrolyser

    • Gas Refinery

    • Plasma Torches

Phase 2 Demonstration:

EPi’s full system will be installed and operated at a dedicated site near Ipswich, showcasing:

  • Real-world hydrogen production from waste

  • Carbon-negative performance

  • Commercial readiness of modular units

Category 3: Novel Biohydrogen Technologies

The project is one of only two funded in Category 3, focusing on novel biohydrogen technologies, with EPi leading the way for zero-emission hydrogen from organic waste.
